Removing Boundaries Through Music: Between 12 Waters

Removing Boundaries Through Music: Between 12 Waters! “Between 12 Waters”, concert performed by musicians from Turkey, Mexico, Singapore and the United States, took place as a part of the 21st Boston Turkish Arts and Culture Festival.

Vocalists from different corners of the world sang guitarist and composer Alper Tuzcu’s original compositions and arrangements, influenced from the sounds of  Anatolia, including Rebetiko, Turkish folk music, and Armenian and Greek sacred music. Alper Tuzcu wrote 12 songs influenced by 12 different cultures, recorded them with musicians from different cultures, and published his first album entitled “Between 12 Waters” this year.

The compositions and arrangements in this concert, although each has its own musical and lyric story, came together under Alper Tuzcu’s vision to combine various musical genres to go beyond cultural and international borders.

In the concert, the audience listened to an eclectic collection of songs inspired by flamenco, folk music, jazz, bossa nova and electronic music, which portrayed Alper Tuzcu’s multilayered characteristic as a composer and guitarist.

Other performers accompanying Alper Tuzcu in the concert were Elif Çakmut, oboe and voice; Enya Lim, voice; Bengisu Gökçe, violin and voice; Daniel Feldman, percussion; and  Sean Brennan, cello.

Alper Tuzcu graduated from Berklee College Music on Composition and Music Production with a scholarship granted during Berklee’s Umbria Jazz Clinics program in Perugia, Italy. He is also a member of a duo poject, “Ark” in Boston.

Erkut Gömülü, Director of the Boston Turkish Festival, emphasized that they were delighted to be able to bring together the music enthusiasts in the U.S. with Turkish musicians through the festival programs.

Boston Turkish Festival, organized annually since 1996, will take place between October 29 – December 15 this year, presenting a series of wide array of arts and cultural events under the theme “Colors of Anatolia”, including exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, concerts, lectures and culinary events.
